Four Prayers to Mary
Prayers To Mary Page
Ave Regina Caelorum
The following four prayers to Mary have as their sources a group of four antiphons, or chants, composed of a verse, a response, and a prayer. These four are:
I Alma Redemptoris Mater (Loving Mother of the Redeemer)
Loving mother of the Redeemer, gate of heaven, star of the sea, assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.
To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator, Yet remained a virgin after as before. You who received Gabriel's joyful greeting, have pity on us poor sinners.
II Ave Regina Caelorum (Hail, O Queen of Heaven enthroned)
O Queen of Heaven enthroned.
Hail, by angels mistress owned.
Root of Jesse, Gate of Morn,
Whence the world's true light was born:
Virgin, Joy to thee,
Loveliest whom in heaven they see;
Fairest thou, where all are fair,
Plead with Christ our souls to spare.
Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O sacred Virgin.
Response: Against thy enemies give me strength.
Let us pray: Grant unto us, O merciful God, a defense against our weakness, that we who remember the holy Mother of God, by the help of her intercession, may rise from our iniquities, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
III Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven)
of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.
For He whom you deserved to bear in your womb, alleluia.
Has risen, as He promised, alleluia.
Pray for us to God, alleluia.
and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.
Response - For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.
Let us pray. O God, who through the resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ gave rejoicing to the world, grant, we pray, that through his Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joy of everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
IV Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen)
holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To you we cry, the children of Eve;
to you we send up our sights,
mourning and weeping in this land of exile.
then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us;
Lead us home at last
and show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus:
O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Amen.
Let us pray: Almighty, everlasting God, who by the co-operation of the Holy Spirit didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin-Mother Mary to become a dwelling-place meet for thy Son: grant that as we rejoice in her commemoration; so by her fervent intercession we may be delivered from present evils and from everlasting death. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
